WREN FUNDING FOR TYNEWYDD FIELD

WREN FUNDING FOR RHYL RUGBY’S TYNEWYDD FIELD PROJECT.

The long-awaited confirmation of the Welsh Government’s handsome £490,000 Community Facilities Grant has finally arrived. This good news, coupled with the offers on the table for the Sports & Social Club on Vale Road and the Club’s ground at the Waen, has enabled the Club to go out to tender for the main construction phase of the projectThis phase of the project on the Tynewydd Field site is scheduled to start in early November, with completion in late summer 2018.

In the meantime, the separately funded work on creating the new playing surfaces at Tynewydd Field is moving on apace. The bulk of the funding for this £90,000 phase has been provided by WREN, who have invested £49,000 into the creation of the main pitch, a practice pitch and two 60m x 35m Junior pitches. Additional support has been received from the WRU and Sport Wales, as well as a contribution from the Club’s own funds.

WREN is a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community, biodiversity and heritage projects from funds donated by FCC Environment through the Landfill Communities Fund.

The completed project will bring a Community Centre and multi-sports hub into the heart of Rhyl. WREN’s initiative brings with it the attendant health and well-being benefits for the youngsters of the town and provides a much needed social resource for the surrounding population.

The new ground’s 10.88 acres were first mown, then sprayed to kill off all the vegetation. The entire area, including the soil from the car park and club house areas, was excavated to depth of a couple of feet, then the soil was replaced on the pitches, levelled and graded, with a small but significant raising of the levels to keep the playing surfaces clear of the water table. The contractors, Wright Landscapes, have remarked that the soil is the finest quality sports-ground soil they have worked with. The seeding has been completed during the last few days, and, with reasonable growing conditions this autumn and next spring and summer, it is anticipated that the pitches will be available for play by the start of the 2018/19 season.

Subject to the completion of the tender assessment process by the end of September, the construction phase of the project should be underway by the start of November, with the building being likely to be available for use at the same time as the pitches.
