Rhyl 34-12 Newtown

Whilst the score line might suggest a comfortable win for the dragons in the early kick off on Saturday at the Waen, the reality was very different. In form Rhyl started the game at a blistering pace with the visitors defence overran at will by some superb back play.  Rhyl took the lead in the 4th minute when following some great running from man of the match flanker Greg Profit, who was outstanding in attack and defence throughout, full back Jack Hughes went over for the first of his two try's.  Rhyl were now totally in control and following further scores from Reeve Wright, Jason Blackmore and Captain Matt Hession the bonus point was secured within twenty minutes. To the visitors credit they gradually worked their way into the game and started to use a strong pack to work up field and after a period of sustained pressure against an under pressure Rhyl scrum the referee awarded a penalty try.  The second period continued in much the same way with Newtown using a dominant scrum and powerful runs from the number 8 to put continual pressure on the home line and it was only some outstanding defence that saw the visitors restricted to one further score even after the home side had been reduced to 12 men following a spate of baffling card decisions from the referee.   A late penalty from Richie Williams settled any nerves and although Head Coach Seb Vidal will be happy with a third straight win, he will be concerned by the dragons poor discipline at times and by allowing themselves to be drawn into an arm wrestle in a game they should have won more comfortably.  Rhyls next game is at home to Flint in the North Wales cup next week.
